Astros place Carlos Correa on DL with back injury

The Houston Astros placed shortstop Carlos Correa on the 10-day disabled list on Thursday with back stiffness.

Correa, 23, missed Houston’s previous two games with stiffness in his back. While the severity of the injury isn’t known, the Astros opted to exercise caution after their shortstop reported more soreness on Thursday morning.

There is good news for Houston. According to manager A.J. Hinch, Correa’s back is improving and the team is feeling optimistic about where he is in the recovery process.

Before the injury, Correa held a .268/.352/.480 slash line with 13 home runs and 49 RBI. Utility player Marwin Gonzalez will likely draw the majority of starts at shortstop in Correa’s absence.
