Arthur Smith became the Atlanta Falcons head coach in 2021, and they have yet to reach the playoffs since. Yet, with the Falcons in first place of the NFC South heading into Week 15, that streak of Atlanta staying home for the postseason every year since 2017 could come to an end.

With matchups against Carolina, Indianapolis, Chicago, and New Orleans, the Falcons appear to have a fighting chance of staying in first place for the rest of the season. Yet, with how inconsistent this team has been, even switching starting quarterbacks, there’s no guarantee the Falcons will find sustained success to close out the year either.

No matter what, win or lose, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler’s sources indicate Smith’s job is safe heading into the offseason.

With several other teams already searching for head coaches, and Bill Belichick expected to become available too, it seems the Falcons front office is content with the progress they’ve already seen from Smith.

So far, Smith has a record of 20-27 across parts of three seasons. This includes two seven-win campaigns in his first two years and now another six victories in 2023.
