Just days after he hired a new football coach, Arizona athletics director Dave Heeke has been fired.
School president Robert C. Robbins made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Heeke had moved quickly to hire a football coach. He chose Brent Brennan from San Jose State to replace Jedd Fisch. Fisch left to take the job at Washington when Kalen DeBoer took the Alabama job after Nick Saban retired.

Arizona president says Heeke led the school through change
In a statement, Robbins said:
“I want to thank Dave for his outstanding efforts in leading our athletics program through a period of significant change. He helped get our men’s and women’s basketball and our football program on a strong trajectory, oversaw the success of several of our sports teams and greatly enhanced the student-athlete experience. Dave always displayed the highest integrity, and I am appreciative of his partnership and dedication. On behalf of all Wildcats, I wish Dave and Liz and their family all the best in years to come.”
Former Arizona softball coach Mike Candrea has been named the interim athletics director.
