The Arizona Diamondbacks designated veteran outfielder Josh Reddick for assignment prior to Thursday’s afternoon game against the visiting San Francisco Giants.

Reddick, 34, was batting .258 with two home runs and 21 RBIs in 54 games with the Diamondbacks.

“It’s just the direction we were going, wanting to give some of the younger players an opportunity,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo told reporters of the move. “Hopefully this gives him a chance to catch on with someone who is contending.”

Reddick has a .262 career average with 146 homers and 575 RBIs in 13 big-league seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Oakland Athletics, Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston Astros and Diamondbacks.

Arizona reinstated first baseman/outfielder Pavin Smith (COVID-19 contact tracing) and right-hander Taylor Clarke (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list, optioned right-hander J.B. Bukauskas to Triple-A Reno and outrighted right-hander Ty Tice to Reno.

The Diamondbacks also reinstated right-hander Riley Smith (COVID-19 contact tracing) from the IL and optioned him to Reno.

Pavin Smith is batting .269 with nine homers and 32 RBIs in 96 games with the Diamondbacks, while Clarke is 1-0 with a 3.74 ERA in 30 relief appearances.

Riley Smith has struggled and is 1-4 with a 6.01 ERA in 24 appearances (six starts).

Bukauskas was 2-2 with a 7.79 ERA in 21 appearances, while Tice hasn’t pitched yet for the Diamondbacks since recently being claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.
