Originally an unsigned free agent back in 2003, tight end Antonio Gates has evolved into the San Diego Chargers’ all-time leading receiver.

Gates will now have a couple of more years to add to the 10,644 yards he has already recorded. He and the Chargers have agreed to a two-year deal that will keep him with the team through the 2017 season.

Rand Getlin of NFL Network reports the contract includes $6 million guaranteed.

During Gates’ remarkable 13-year NFL career, he has achieved All-Pro status three times and is an eight-time Pro-Bowler. The only thing missing is a Super Bowl ring.

In Gates’ tenure with the Chargers, the team has visited the postseason six times. Perhaps in one of his final two seasons, the Chargers can make it all the way.
