Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards attempted Monday to put some distance between himself and text messages he wrote to a woman that appear to be urging her to have an abortion.
“I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man,” Edwards wrote Monday on X, formerly Twitter.
“All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them. I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time.”
Edwards, 22, was tagged Sunday in an Instagram post by Paige Jordae, who included text messages allegedly sent between her and the Timberwolves player.
In the alleged text messages, Jordae shares a photo of a positive pregnancy test and Edwards responds, “Hell nawl can’t do dis,” then “Get a abortion lol.”
When Jordae expresses regret over a previous abortion, Edwards continues to seemingly urge her to get an abortion, sending messages including, “I don’t want a kid,” “I will send you money to help you out,” “you got da money whats the hol up” and “just take the pills.”
He also repeatedly requested video of her taking the abortion pills, writing, “OK, just make sure I get da video of the box wit the right pills.”
Jordae’s screenshots show her sharing a video that she alleges is of her taking the pills, but Edwards again sends a text that includes, “you gotta send video.”
Jordae subsequently posted an Instagram story that showed a receipt for an incoming wire transfer for $100,000, according to multiple reports.
On the court, Edwards is averaging 24.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game this season with the Timberwolves, who at 19-5 have the best record in the Western Conference. They face the Miami Heat on the road Monday night.
