Andrew Wiggins

Four times this season Andrew Wiggins has scored at least 22 points in a game. The Golden State Warriors are 1-3 in those games.

Looking at it one way, Wiggins has not played up to expectations.

For another, in the games Wiggins has played well, he didn’t get much help.

In the 120-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Christmas Day, Wiggins scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and Steph Curry added seven. The Warriors scored 25 total.

During the Warriors’ last championship run in 2022, Wiggins was a key part of the team’s success.

In the Finals against the Boston Celtics, Wiggins was the second-leading scorer at 18.8 and led the team in rebounding.

This season, Wiggins is scoring 12.3 points and averaging 4.6 rebounds. That’s six points worse than his career scoring average.

Golden State needs more than Curry, who leads the team in scoring 28.3. Draymond Green is serving a suspension for the second time this season and Klay Thompson has disappeared. Monday he had nine.

Wiggins has been so ineffective this season that coach Steve Kerr benched him right before he missed the last two games before Monday with an illness.

He has played better in that role, averaging 13.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists in four games coming off the bench.

Whatever it takes, the Warriors need Wiggins to find it. They need him to contribute more like he had Christmas Day to get going.
