News today on the Raiders delayed Allegiant Stadium roof is sure to fuel conspiracy theorists and detractors who opine for any bad news concerning the $1.8 billion stadium project.
The delay was confirmed by Las Vegas Review-Journal business reporter Rick Velotta late today.
According to the report, Raiders team officials have said details on the roof installation are coming soon and the delay will not mean the project misses its July 31 substantial completion date.
As part of the checks-and-balances system put in by the Las Vegas Stadium Authority, an independent auditor is monitoring progress on the project and has raised concerns about the roof installation, according to Velotta’s report.
“Representatives of Las Vegas-based Grand Canyon Development Partners acknowledged that installation of the roof is not on the critical path to finishing the stadium,” the Review-Journal story said.
Grand Canyon stated in its report the delay could mean weather-related damages since the stadium will be exposed to the elements far longer than expected.

“Because of the delay in the overall building enclosure, there is the possibility of weather damage as more finish work is put in place,” the report cited in Velotta’s story said.
It also said due to the opportunity for more damage due to exposure to weather, the Temporary Certificate of Occupancy date could be in jeopardy.
The cable roof system, the biggest of its kind ever attempted in North America, is by far the most challenging and difficult project to reach completion of the Raiders and UNLV’s new stadium home. Although rumors of the delay have been reported since last fall, and again earlier this year, this is the first definitive confirmation of a delay. The Raiders did delay raising the cable system in November, claiming it would be completed before the end of the year.
While the delay is sure to fuel more discussion about a possible delayed opening of the stadium, we should find out more at Thursday’s Las Vegas Stadium Authority board meeting.
