Cotton had been stopped for a routine traffic issue. When police approached the vehicle, they reportedly “smelled the odor of marijuana,” prompting a search of Cotton’s Chevy Tahoe.

Nick Saban, responding to the arrest, issued the following statement:

“We are in the process of determining the facts in the situation with Lester Cotton” he said. “We will discipline internally like we have done in the past.”

It’s uncertain how much or if this will affect Cotton’s position in Alabama’s program. He started three games for the Crimson Tide last year and is expected to compete for a starting offensive guard position in 2017. A highly-valued four-star recruit who went to high school in Tuscaloosa, expectations have been high for him to become a dominant force for Alabama since he made his commitment to the Crimson Tide.
