While many wrestling fans think Will Ospreay is the best wrestler on the planet right now, the AEW superstar believes he already peaked inside the ring. And it was years ago.

Before he became a bigger household name in the United States with AEW, on the other side of the globe, Ospreay developed a reputation as one of this industry’s finest talents during a memorable run in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Winning many of the promotion’s top titles and taking part in classic matches.

After joining AEW in 2023, the Englishman has maintained the high standard he set in NJPW. In a promotion that has already had a bunch of legendary matches since its inception in 2019, Ospreay has also stamped his place in All Elite lore with some of the amazing matches he has had over the last three years.

Yet, despite being in several five-star matches, he doesn’t think AEW fans have seen the best version of him, and they probably never will. In a new conversation with Forbes, Will Ospreay had a very interesting opinion about his run in NJPW.

“In 2019, I felt like at that time I was the best in the world. I felt like I was at my peak in a weird way. But I do believe my peak was probably during the COVID era, which f***in sucks.”

– Will Ospreay

You have to respect Ospreay’s honesty. Rarely do high-level athletes admit their best days are behind them. Especially at 32 years old. However, after a long career of death-defying moves and following double fusion neck surgery last year, it will be hard for him to recapture that level of athleticism.

However, that does not mean he can’t still be the best wrestler on the planet and has many more legendary matches ahead of him. It will just have to be done in a different way.
