Abby Dahlkemper, a starter on the U.S. women’s national team during its championship run at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, is back with the squad for two upcoming friendlies against China.

The 30-year-old defender hasn’t played for the U.S. team this year due to her recovery from back surgery. However, Dahlkemper got back to action with her club side, the San Diego Wave.

Also back with the national team is midfielder Rose Lavelle, who last played for the USWNT at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where the U.S. lost on penalty kicks to Sweden in the Round of 16 in Australia.

The U.S. will oppose China on Dec. 2 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and on Dec. 5 in Frisco, Texas, without some of its biggest stars. Forward Alex Morgan, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and defenders Becky Sauerbrunn and Crystal Dunn were all omitted from the squad for the final games of the year.

Two midfield newcomers were selected: Gotham FC’s Jenna Nighswonger, the NWSL Rookie of the Year, and Paris Saint-Germain’s Korbin Albert.

Interim coach Twila Kilgore will continue to guide the U.S. side into next year, with newly appointed head coach Emma Hayes remaining with Chelsea FC through the end of the current season.
