49ers Release Ray McDonald

That didn’t take too long.

Just hours after it was reported that Ray McDonald was being investigated for sexual assault, the San Francisco 49ers have released the veteran defensive tackle.

San Francisco stood behind McDonald during his domestic abuse case earlier this year, indicating that it wanted the legal process to play out. McDonald was never charged in that case.

But this time, it appears that the 49ers have had enough. General manager Trent Baalke pointed to “McDonald’s pattern of poor decision-making is reason 49ers have decided to terminate his contract.”

McDonald’s latest off-field incident sparked a search warrant being issued for his residence in Northern California after an unidentified woman claimed that she might have been sexually assaulted while speaking to investigators in a hospital earlier this week.

San Jose Police Department Sgt. Heather Randol indicated that McDonald was the suspect in the alleged sexual assault.

And just a couple hours later, McDonald was released by an organization that supported him in a previous run-in with the law. It’s a move San Francisco simply needed to make at this point.
