San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is likely out for Sunday’s game with the Houston Texans — and possibly well beyond.

The 49ers (8-7) are in the thick of the NFC playoff race but Garoppolo is not expected to be available Sunday due to a torn thumb ligament in his throwing hand. He was injured last week.

Per multiple reports Sunday, Garoppolo needs surgery and his availability for the rest of the season is a question mark. NFL Network reported the 49ers are hopeful Garoppolo could be available if the team makes the playoffs.

He was listed as doubtful through Saturday, but the 49ers prepared rookie Trey Lance to start against Houston.

“He’s not out, so I’m holding out hope,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.

ESPN reported Garoppolo was planning to delay any surgery to the offseason.

The 49ers can’t afford a loss or their playoff position becomes tenuous and help from other teams would be needed to reach the postseason.
