49ers interviewing Tom Cable for head coaching job

It’s not a bad dream, San Francisco 49ers fans. A day after his Seattle Seahawks were humiliated by the Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs, offensive line coach and assistant head coach Tom Cable is interviewing for the vacant 49ers head coaching job.

The team announced the interview on social media Sunday afternoon.

Cable joins offensive coordinators Josh McDaniels (Patriots) and Kyle Shanahan (Falcons) as known candidates for the final head coaching vacancy in the NFL.

Needless to say, Cable’s presence among the group of candidates has not been met with warm thoughts from those around the NFL world, 49ers fans included.

Cable has spent the past six seasons with Seattle in his current role overseeing one of the worst offensive lines in the entire league. Prior to that, he spent three disappointing seasons as the Oakland Raiders’ head coach. That’s a span of action that saw the Raiders put up a 17-27 record.

Off the field, Cable is a divisive figure. Back in 2009, he was accused of domestic violence by two women, his ex-girlfriend and ex-wife. To top that off, Cable got into a violent confrontation with a member of the Raiders’ staff (via ESPN).

Considering 49ers CEO Jed York has consistently used the term “winning with class” to describe what he wants from his team, the interview in and of itself is about as weird as it gets. Now take into account Cable’s struggles as the Seahawks’ offensive line coach, and this is magnified further.

Of the three remaining candidates for the 49ers’ head coaching job, Cable is the only one the team can hire within the next week. Both McDaniels and Shanahan are currently coaching on teams prepared to play in the conference championship round.
