The PGA Tour returns to the U.S. for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., for another designated event.

Last week, Tony Finau won by three shots over World No. 1 Jon Rahm at the Mexico Open at Vidanta. With the win, Finau joined Rahm, Scottie Scheffler and Max Homa as the only players with multiple wins on the PGA Tour this season.

As last week’s course was long, Quail Hollow is longer, measuring 7,538 yards on the par-71 property. Unlike last week, rain will come into play on Saturday and Sunday, meaning Mother Nature will provide a challenge for the field as the week progresses.

Besides the precipitation, the length is going to challenge players to execute shots, especially off the tee in order to have success this week.

Last time, Quail Hollow was the home to the game’s best players was during the fall for the 2022 Presidents Cup as Team USA defeated Team International. As a of Monday, 17 of the 24 participants from last year’s Presidents Cup are competing this week.

Since the course was upgraded by Tom Fazio in preparation for the 2017 PGA Championship that was won by Justin Thomas, Quail Hollow has been a site for difficult play for its own three-hole stretch called, “The Green Mile.” It lasts the final three holes for a par-4 on the 16th, a par-3 on the 17th and a par-4 on the 18th hole.

When Quail Hollow last hosted the Wells Fargo Championship in 2021, the final three holes averaged a combined 0.847 strokes over par, signifying the difficulty on the finishing holes.

Payout for the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship

The total purse for the event is set at $20 million and the winner will receive $3.6 million. In addition, the winner will receive 500 FedEx Cup points towards the FedEx Cup standings.

Who are some of the top golfers in the Wells Fargo Championship?

Jon Rahm, who has accumulated nearly $14.5 million in winnings this season, which already surpasses Scottie Scheffler’s record from last year, is the biggest name taking the week off. Speaking of Scheffler, he is also taking the week off, leaving the best player on the Official World Golf Rankings to be Rory McIlroy and the best from the FedEx Cup standings is Max Homa.

Homa and McIlroy have combined to win the last three Wells Fargo Championships. Homa won in 2019 and 2022 while McIlroy was victorious in 2021. Quail Hollow did not host the Wells Fargo Championship in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and last year due to preparation for the Presidents Cup.

Below McIlroy in the World Ranking are Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who were partners at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans a couple weeks ago and finished fourth. This week, Cantlay has a new caddie in Joe Lacava, who has been Tiger Woods’ caddie in the past.

Reigning U.S. Open champion and World No. 5 Matt Fitzpatrick is in the field after winning the RBC Heritage in South Carolina a couple weeks ago. In addition, after finishing solo fourth last week in Mexico, Akshay Bhatia competes this week after earning his Special Temporary PGA Tour membership earlier this year.

5 players who can hoist the Wells Fargo Championship trophy on Sunday

Rory McIlroy

With no Rahm or Scheffler in the field, this is the perfect time for Rory McIlroy to win. McIlroy, who has won at Quail Hollow three times (2010, 2015 and 2021), is looking to get back on top after missing a couple of cuts and withdrawing from his second designated event at the RBC Heritage due to personal reasons.

McIlroy, who won The CJ Cup in October, is looking to join Rahm, Scheffler, Finau and Homa as the only player to win at least two times on the PGA Tour this season. As much as the experience favors McIlroy, he also leads the PGA Tour in Driving Distance, is second in strokes gained: tee to green, fifth in strokes gained: off the tee and ninth in strokes gained total.

Max Homa

Max Homa comes into this week as the reigning Wells Fargo Championship winner, although it took place at TPC Potomac last year instead of Quail Hollow. However, Homa’s 2019 Wells Fargo Championship victory came at Quail Hollow as he recorded all four rounds at 70 or below, highlighted by his 8-under 71 in the second round.

During the Presidents Cup, Homa was one of the hottest players, going 4-0 in his matches. That momentum will be key for him as he looks for his third win this season.

Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland started strong at the Masters last month with his 7-under 65 in the first round before faltering as the weather suspended play and his rhythm. Hovland, who tied for seventh at Augusta, was one of two players to finish inside the top ten at both the Masters and THE PLAYERS Championship in March, joining Scheffler.

In total, Hovland has five top-10s and is still in search of his first official win this season. Hovland is seventh on the PGA Tour this season in strokes gained: off the tee and 15th in strokes gained: tee to green, while being fourth in total driving. Hovland has yet to miss a cut at a non-major tournament in nearly 15 months.

Xander Schauffele

Like Hovland, Xander Schuaffele is also looking for his first win of the season. Schauffele’s seven top-10 finishes this season are tied with Sahith Theegala and only trail both Rahm and Scheffler at eight. Although Schauffele has a third place finish this season, he had to roar back to that spot instead of contending at the top and faltering.

After back-to-back fourth place finishes at the Zurich Classic and the RBC Heritage that has vaulted him up 14 spots in the FedEx Cup Standings to No. 21, Schauffele has the opportunity to grab a big win en route to another hot finish to the season.

Keith Mitchell

If there is one player not from top echelon of players to win this week, it’s Keith Mitchell, who has four top 10 finishes this season, including at one of the designated events in The Genesis Invitational when he finished in solo fifth.

With the length of the course in mind, Mitchell ranks first in total driving and sixth in strokes gained: off the tee this season. Currently sitting at 51st in the FedEx Cup Standings, a good week from Mitchell puts him contention to get closer to competing in the Tour Championship in August.
