This week’s tournament on the PGA Tour heads to McKinney, Texas, for the AT&T Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch. It is a 30-minute drive from Dallas.

Last week for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C., Wyndham Clark won by four strokes over World No. 5 Xander Schauffele and secured not only his first PGA Tour victory but his first professional win. Clark’s last win came during his time at the University of Oregon when he was named the 2017 Pac-12 Player of the Year.

Both Clark and Schauffele entered the top 10 of the FedEx Cup Standings as the former Duck vaulted 31 spots to No. 5 and the San Diego State alumnus jumped 13 spots to No. 8.

With a week before the second major of the year – the PGA Championship – some are taking the week off to prepare, looking to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy.

However, there are 25 players competing this week that will also be teeing it up next week at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

The AT&T Byron Nelson has been K.H. Lee’s event the past two seasons. He has won this tournament the last two years and is looking to make it a third. Last year, Lee won by one stroke over Jordan Spieth as Lee recorded a final round 9-under 63 to defend his 2021 AT&T Byron Nelson victory.  Lee was one of eight golfers last year to record three bogeys, the tournament low.

Lee is looking to become the 10th player since World War II to have won a PGA Tour event three consecutive years. Seven of the 10 players are World Golf Hall of Famers and the last player to achieve a three-peat was Steve Stricker at the Jon Deere Classic from 2009-11.

This year, one change to the TPC Craig Ranch course is that it is now a par-71 after last year being a par-72. The change comes primarily on the 12th hole as it was a par-5 at 547 yards that saw 33 eagles throughout the four rounds a dozen months ago. This year, the 12th hole is a long par 4, measuring 493 yards.

As a result, holes like the 12th are going to challenge golfers to execute shots off the tee to set up solid approach shots onto the green and the weather will also play a factor with rain, thunder and wind in the forecast for all four days.

This tournament is one of two PGA Tour events on the schedule that is named after a professional golfer with the other being Arnold Palmer. Byron Nelson won 52 times on the PGA Tour and did that while retiring at an early age of 34. 18 of his 52 wins and a streak of 11 consecutive victories came during the 1945 season alone, two records that will probably never be broken again.

Who are some of the top golfers in the AT&T Byron Nelson field?

Jordan Spieth, who is a fan favorite on the PGA Tour, and especially at the AT&T Byron Nelson, had to withdraw this week due to a wrist injury he suffered after last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

“The AT&T Byron Nelson means the absolute world to me and I’m disappointed to miss it this week,” Spieth said in a statement on Twitter. “Playing in front of family and friends in Dallas is one of the highlights of my year, and the tournament staff and volunteers are second to none. I look forward to being back next year and many years after.”

Although Spieth and Schauffele are taking the week off and gearing up for next week’s PGA Championship, Scottie Scheffler returns to action after missing last week.

Scheffler is not the only native Texan to compete this week. Also in the field from Texas include players such as Harry Higgs, Ryan Palmer and twins, Parker and Pierceson Coody. No Texan has won this event since 2007.

Both Hideki Matsuyama and Aaron Wise are making their return to the PGA Tour. Matsuyama, who tied for third at the AT&T Byron Nelson last year, had to withdraw last week due to getting continued treatment on his neck.

Wise, who won the AT&T Byron Nelson in 2018 and was the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year that same year, withdrew from the Masters last month due to his mental health. He returns to a comfortable place with previous success.

5 players who the best chance to win the AT&T Byron Nelson trophy on Sunday

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler, who took a breather after skipping last week, has played in 12 events this season. He has yet to miss a cut and has eight top 10s and two victories. The eight top-10 finishes are tied with Schauffele and world No. 1 Jon Rahm for the PGA Tour lead. Since placing 45th at The CJ Cup in October, Scheffler has finished no worse than 12th this season.

Although no Texan has won this event in 16 years, Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in both strokes gained: off the tee and tee to green. He is first in greens in regulation and second in strokes gained: total. With no Spieth this week, Scheffler is most popular Longhorn alum.

K.H. Lee

The two-time reigning AT&T Byron Nelson champion comes into this week after a top-10 finish last week at the Wells Fargo Championship. That momentum will be key for the South Korean this week looking to achieve his third straight victory.

Over the last two AT&T Byron Nelson events, Lee has posted a whopping 51-under par. Although he is doing this on one of the easiest par-72 courses on the PGA Tour in a full field, he is still finding a way to win. In addition, by being 54th in the FedEx Cup Standings, a week like this with the experience to win, will give him some cushion as the top 70 make the first week of the FedEx Cup playoffs followed by the top 50 for the second week.

Matt Kuchar

Despite being 44 years old, Matt Kuchar is still finding success on the PGA Tour. He has four top-10s this year, including at two of the designated events in The Genesis Invitational and the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play event. Kuchar followed up his match play finish by placing third at the Valero Texas Open the following week.

Although Kuchar can not drive it like the other longer hitters on the PGA Tour, he makes up for it in his short game. Kuchar leads the PGA Tour in sans save percentage, scrambling and strokes gained: around the green. His short game also leads him to being 13th in strokes gained: total.

Tyrrell Hatton

Last week, Tyrrell Hatton had the 36-hole lead but could not get it done, finishing third behind Schauffele and Clark. However, it is good momentum heading into this week after his last four finishes being CUT, T34, T19 and T3.

Like Kuchar, Hatton has four top 10s as the Englishman, who finished second at The PLAYERS Championship in March is inside the top 10 in strokes gained: total, tee to green, off the tee and approach the green. That all around play can be effective at any course, especially this week at TPC Craig Ranch.

Adam Scott

Another PGA Tour player above the age of 40 cracks this list in 42-year-old Adam Scott, who is coming off of his first top 10 finish of the season last week. With three months left before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, this is the time to start getting hot as Scott needs to put together some solid finishes as he currently sits outside the top 70 to make the first weekend at No. 105.

Scott has made 17 consecutive cuts, which ranks second with Viktor Hovland and Cameron Young and only behind Schauffele, who’s made 24 consecutive cuts. The key for the Aussie this week will be his putting as he led the field in putts per green in regulation last week.
