The Dallas Cowboys are already without one of their big free-agent signings from this past spring after Gerald McCoy suffered a season-ending injury and was ultimately released by the team.

We can now add another big-name free-agent signing in Big D that didn’t necessarily pan out for Jerry Jones and Co.

Cowboys release former Packers Pro Bowl safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

“Signed in March to a one-year deal worth $3.75 million, veteran safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was released by the Cowboys Thursday, according to multiple sources,” ESPN’s Todd Archer reported Thursday.

A first-round pick of the Packers back in 2014, Clinton-Dix received $2.25 million guaranteed at the time of the signing. This means Dallas saves a mere $1.5 million in in cap space.

The former Alabama standout earned a Pro Bowl appearance with Green Bay back in 2016. He spent last season with the Chicago Bears, recording 78 tackles, five passes defended and two interceptions.

Does the Clinton-Dix release mean the Cowboys are in on Earl Thomas?

Obviously, the question now becomes whether Dallas makes a play for recently-released future Hall of Fame safety Earl Thomas. After his release from the Ravens last month, the Cowboys became the obvious potential landing spot for Thomas.

The seven-time Pro Bowler is a native of the Dallas area and had in the past expressed interest in returning home. Though, the Cowboys made it clear they were not interested in the former Seattle Seahawks star following his release from Baltimore.

Naturally, Thomas would seem to be a fit following the release of Clinton-Dix. As of right now, Luther King and former New York Giants mid-round pick Darian Thompson would be competing next to Xavier Woods at safety heading into Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams.

It will be interesting to see if we hear anything on the Thomas to Dallas front with roster cut-down day coming this weekend. For now, it’s just speculation.
