Report: Steve Cohen making ‘big push’ to buy New York Mets

New York Mets fans nearly had reason to celebrate this offseason when the Wilpon family nearly sold the team to billionaire Steve Cohen. While the deal ultimately fell through, Cohen is reportedly back in the mix to take over his favorite team.

Will Steve Cohen buy the New York Mets?

The New York Mets were nearly sold to multibillionaire Steve Cohen before the deal fell apart in February. The Wilpons explored a number of suitors, including some who would partner with Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez. However, the level of interest in the team has dropped since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, the team remains on the market and negotiations are ongoing, which could lead to the eventual sale of the team this year.

Now, according to the New York Post’s Thomas McEnery, Cohen is making another big push at buying the team from the Wilpons. Furthermore, he might be the only person willing to come close to the $2 billion price tag the Wilpons are reportedly seeking.

Cohen, 64, has a net worth over $13 billion and grew up loving the Mets. Given MLB’s desire to find an owner who will spend significantly, taking advantage of one of the league’s most marketable clubs in a big city, Cohen could be the perfect candidate.

The Mets are unlikely to compete for a World Series title this year and it’s not even certain if MLB will finish its 2020 season. If this club is sold to Cohen and the Wilpons are gone, though, that might feel like winning a championship to this fan base.
