Report: Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension likely to ‘shatter records’

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes at the line

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has transcended the position and uplifted the organization ever since he took the field. Now, the Chiefs are seemingly prepared to reward him with a contract extension that will match his historic accomplishments.

Patrick Mahomes expected to sign contract that will “shatter records”

The COVID-19 pandemic has created uncertainty for NFL teams over the league’s future cap situation, especially if organizations lose out on stadium revenue. While it might be causing some delays in the Chiefs’ negotiations with Mahomes, it sounds like it won’t prevent a record-breaking contract.

According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, many around the NFL expect Mahomes’ contract extension will shatter records for the market and set an entirely new precedent for contracts.

Talks between the two sides will likely intensify this summer, potentially when the Super Bowl LIV MVP reports for training camp. Fresh off bringing the Lombardi Trophy to Kansas City, Mahomes’ extension could be unlike any we’ve seen in NFL history.

Currently, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is the league’s highest-paid player, earning $35 million per season. At the early point of discussions between the Chiefs and Mahomes, though, it became clear Mahomes will at least hit $40 million per year on his new deal.

Set to enter his age-25 season, Mahomes already has earned All-Pro honors, an NFL MVP award and is a two-time Pro Bowl selection. While the Chiefs could wait until his rookie contract expires after the 2021 season, the organization would be wise to sign him quickly.
