Jadeveon Clowney remains a free agent with the 2020 NFL season just a few months away. As the star pass rusher continues to weigh his options, the Cleveland Browns don’t seem to be giving up their pursuit of the Pro Bowl edge rusher.
Cleveland Browns trying to sign Jadeveon Clowney
The Cleveland Browns have been interested in Clowney for months. The three-time Pro Bowl selection came into the offseason pursuing a market-setting contract to make him one of the league’s highest-paid linebackers. However, he quickly learned that the level of interest around the NFL wasn’t mutual.
Clowney, entering his age-27 season, has waited patiently this offseason and is willing to drag things out even longer. No team has come close to his asking price. The one team that has made him the most lucrative offer, the Cleveland Browns, is the team he isn’t interested in.
The Browns aren’t giving up. According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the organization is still trying to him. Presently, Clowney is seeking $17 million per season and it’s not a mark Cleveland wants to match. If he lowers his price, though, both sides could be in business.
Clowney has received some interest from a few other teams, including one surprise organization. However, no other club has shown a willingness to approach Cleveland’s offer.
Simply put, NFL teams are concerned about Clowney’s work ethic and his durability. Coming off a season that saw him miss three games and be limited in others due to a core muscle injury, while recording just three sacks, Clowney will need to prove himself at some point.
