Mitchell Trubisky feels like Chicago Bears are still ‘my team’

Bears news: Matt Nagy

When the Chicago Bears traded with Jacksonville earlier this year to acquire Nick Foles, Mitchell Trubisky was immediately put on the hot seat. The fourth-year quarterback has been a vast disappointment so far in his career and many already call him a bust. But that hasn’t stopped Trubisky from staying positive about his situation.

Mitchell Trubisky gives himself edge to win Chicago Bears starting job

Speaking about the upcoming quarterback competition in Chicago this summer, Trubisky gave himself an edge. He also said, “I still feel like this is my team.”

“I think because it’s a small sample size, that advantage goes to me, just because I’ve been the starter here the last two years,” Trubisky said, per NFL.com. “These are my guys, my teammates, guys I’ve built super strong relationships (with) over the last two years. But at the end of the day, it comes down to on-field performance. I think we both know that, the coaches know that and our teammates know that.

“So when it comes down to getting on the field in training camp and competing against our defense, we just want to go out there and be a better offense. I just got to make sure the offense is better when I’m on the field, doing my job to the best I possibly can and making sure I’m giving the Chicago Bears a great chance to win heading into the season.”

For what it’s worth, many expect Foles to emerge victorious and claim the Bears starting quarterback job.

Nick Foles has the stats and experience to beat out Mitchell Trubisky

Last season after inking a huge contract in free agency in Jacksonville, Foles was injured and missed much of the season. He ultimately started four games and struggled in them, passing for 736 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. As a result, Foles lost the starting job to rookie Gardner Minshew.

But things may be different in Chicago. First of all, Foles has shown the ability play at an extremely high level on a contending team in the past. His two postseason ventures with Philadelphia showed that in a big way. In 2018, during the regular season after replacing Carson Wentz, Foles completed 72.3% of his passes for 1,413 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions.

Since being drafted No. 2 overall in 2017, Trubisky has always struggled with consistency and accuracy. In three seasons as a pro, he has completed 63.4% of his passes for 8,554 yards with 48 touchdowns and 29 interceptions.

Trubisky been a big reason why the Chicago offense is so limited the past couple of years. Teams can simply attack up front, knowing Trubisky isn’t equipped to take advantage of any holes opening up on the back end.

With that in mind, I’ll personally be surprised if he’s starting under center this fall for Chicago.
