The Cleveland Browns are still in the hunt to land free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The organization reportedly is still interested in pairing Clowney with star Myles Garrett, who is set to ink a monster contract extension soon.
Browns ‘haven’t given up’ on landing Jadeveon Clowney
Writing about the ongoing contract talks between Garrett and the Browns, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com shared that the Browns are still eyeing Clowney as well.
“The Browns have also been big players in the Clowney sweepstakes this offseason, and they haven’t given up on the idea of landing him, sources tell cleveland.com.”
Kay Cabot also shared that, “The Browns haven’t slammed the door shut on Clowney because he’s still on the market and his opportunities elsewhere seem to be dwindling.”
Reportedly, Clowney is still hoping to earn around $17 million in 2020. The Browns aren’t interested in signing him to that lofty of a contract, but if he comes down off his demand they could swoop him up.
Though, there’s another angle to this as well. Reportedly, the Browns have offered Clowney more than any other team already but he has chosen not to sign with Cleveland. So perhaps Clowney has other reasons besides money for abstaining.
Which other NFL teams could sign Jadeveon Clowney?
The Seattle Seahawks are still not closing the door on re-signing Clowney. However, given the moves that franchise has made this offseason the money would be significantly less than what he’s talked about.
Clowney has received some interest from a few other teams, including one surprise organization. However, no other club has shown a willingness to approach Cleveland’s offer.
One team to keep an eye on is the Tennessee Titans. General manager Jon Robinson recently said there hasn’t been any recent conversations but also said there “was some mutual interest.”
“I know he wants to play,” Robinson said. “I think we would be a pretty good fit for him. There was some mutual interest there when we started the discussions, but I would say that really hasn’t grown legs since we spoke last.”
Though Clowney didn’t put up jaw-dropping stats last season in Seattle, he showed he’s still capable of dominating elite competition. He’ll land on his feet at some point, even if it’s not for the kind of money he wanted initially.
