Bears star on whether Kaepernick is being blackballed: ‘We signed Mike Glennon’

Colin Kaepernick protests

There’s now renewed debate over free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick. It started following the murder of George Floyd by a now-former Minneapolis police officer last week.

In the week-plus of protests since, Kaepernick’s national anthem protests from years ago has found its way back on to the front burner. Those taking to the streets in the United States continue to kneel in front of police officers.

Drew Brees comments about Colin Kaepernick

All of this was magnified earlier on Wednesday when future Hall of Fame New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees opined that kneeling in front of the flag was a sign of disrespect. Some of the biggest stars in the sports world have called out Mr. Brees for that stance.

Now comes this hilarious quote from Chicago Bears defensive tackle Akiem Hicks. He told reporters that Kaepernick is no longer in the NFL because he took a knee back in 2016. The reasoning? Hicks’ Bears team signed Mike Glennon over the former Super Bowl quarterback.

That’s a whole new level of shade throwing. Targeting a former teammate at that level is also as petty as it gets.

Though, Hicks is not necessarily wrong. Chicago signed Glennon to a three-year, $45 million contract back in 2017. That paid off by the Bears seeing him start four games in his only season with the team, throwing four touchdowns compared to five interceptions in the process.

Kaepernick’s final season in the NFL came with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2016. He tallied 18 total touchdowns compared to four interceptions.

For what it’s worth, Glennon remains in the NFL as the backup quarterback to Gardner Minshew with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
