Cam Newton hasn’t gotten so much as a sniff from NFL teams looking at quarterbacks since he was released by the Carolina Panthers.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that makes some amount of sense. Teams want a first-hand look at his health after injuries ravaged him the past few years. They can’t get it right now.
There may be another big reason Newton hasn’t signed yet, though. And it makes some sense. He wants to be a starter. And teams that needed a starter have already made moves.
So, when would he consider signing with a team in free agency?
Cam Newton could wait until starter gets hurt to sign
Joe Person of The Athletic shared Sunday that there is “no way” Newton will sign with any team as a backup. He also said that Newton could simply “wait until a starter gets hurt” to make his move.
Newton is a former NFL MVP and is one of the game’s most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks. When healthy, he is extremely dangerous. So, it’s not surprising he isn’t interested in signing as a backup.
What remains to be seen is how long he’ll have to wait. The NFL season may or may not kick off on time. Training camps will almost certainly be delayed. So, it could be quite a while before he signs on the dotted line.
