There has been a lot of consternation about the state of college football in California this fall. Among the questions being asked is this: Will the Pac-12 be able to feature all of its teams?
Speaking with Paul Finebaum Tuesday, Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott discussed this topic.
Larry Scott expressed confidence all Pac-12 teams will play football this fall
When asked about the level of concern that not all Pac-12 teams will be able to play football this fall, Scott said, “At this stage, I don’t have that concern.”
Scott also talked briefly about what would be needed to maintain acceptable levels of safety protocols on both sides of the field.
California has been extremely cautious about relaxing distancing measures compared to other states. However, last week Governor Gavin Newsom expressed optimism that pro sports teams may soon be able to play games without fans. That should mean positive things for college sports as well.
The main potential hiccup to the Pac-12 football teams playing is whether students are allowed on campus or not. We already know that the California State University system (23 schools) will not have students on campus during the fall semester. We also know that in the past college athletic directors have said football won’t happen if students are not on campus.
However, football season draws closer and the amount of money that stands to be lost without games has shifted into focus. With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that the goalposts might potentially be moved.
