Could Dak Prescott leave the Dallas Cowboys if he plays 2020 season on the franchise tag?

Dak Prescott contract

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys remain far apart on long-term contract talks. The quarterback could play the 2020 season on the franchise tag. If that happens, it could spell doom for the ‘Boys.

History shows Dak Prescott could leave the Cowboys if he plays on the tag

The Cowboys made sure to lock Prescott up for this season by using the exclusive franchise tag. According to NFL Research, per NFL.com, there have been eight quarterbacks to be hit with the tag. Of those eight, two played that season on the franchise tag after their franchises failed to sign them to long-term deals.

Those two quarterbacks were:

  • Kirk Cousins (2017 with the Washington Redskins)
  • Drew Brees (2005 with the San Diego Chargers)

As you likely know, Cousins went on to sign a record-breaking contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2018. Brees, of course, signed a six-year contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2006, and he’s been in the Bayou ever since.

Latest rumors on Dak Prescott and the Cowboys

There are a couple of strong, consistent signals emanating from the negotiations between Prescott and the Cowboys.

First, the biggest issue surrounding the contract discussions has to do with the length of a potential deal. Prescott reportedly wants a four-year deal to take advantage of the rising salary cap. The Cowboys want him on a five-year contract.

The second issue is that there reportedly hasn’t been much real movement for quite some time. Months, in fact.

The two sides have until July 15 to work out a long-term contract. That’s the deadline for franchise-tagged players to pen a long-term deal. If they don’t come to an agreement by then, Prescott would either need to play the season on the tag, or sit 2020 out.

There’s no indication Prescott would abstain from playing this season. But if he does play on the franchise tag in 2020, it could mean the end of his relationship with the Cowboys.
