Report: Blockbuster Trent Williams trade still on the table

Trent WIlliams, Redskins, trade

The entire drama between franchise left tackle Trent Williams and his Washington Redskins has now lasted over a full calendar year.

By now, it’s well known that Williams did not play last season. He held out due to both contract issues and a problem with former Redskins president Bruce Allen.

There was hope that the relationship could be mended now that Allen is no longer part of the Skins’ organization and with Ron Rivera manning the sideline. That’s not the case. Williams still wants out of the nation’s capital.

According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, that could potentially happen during the 2020 NFL Draft later this week. The insider noted that a Williams trade to the Cleveland Browns is still on the table.

Cleveland has been linked to the seven-time Pro Bowler more than any other team in recent months. It makes sense in that the team is likely going to target an offensive tackle with the 10th overall pick in the draft. If it can get someone of Williams’ ilk without exhausting said pick, Cleveland will have to think long and hard about doing it.

The Browns added former Tennessee Titans All-Pro Jack Conklin in free agency last month. They still have a need at left tackle in front of franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield.

It’s likely that Cleveland would have to move its second-round pick (41st) overall in a trade for Williams. The team would then have to sign him to a lofty extension. This would be a high price to pay, but it’s more than worth it.
