The Washington Redskins already added one familiar quarterback this offseason. And previously, they have said they won’t sign Cam Newton.
Ron Rivera, back in March, made it clear that Newton wasn’t in the team’s plans.
“At the end of the day, we have a young football team with a young quarterback in position,” Rivera said when asked about the Redskins’ interest in signing Newton, “and we have the chance to establish this thing, so that’s the way we’re looking at it. Going forward, you never know what’s going to happen, but that’s where we are right now, and we’ve made a commitment to a young guy — to young guys, to be honest with you — to find out who we have as a football team.”

Appearing on NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football” Thursday (h/t NFL.com), Rivera opened up. He once again touted Kyle Allen and Dwayne Haskins as two young players the franchise is interested in developing.
“We’re in a situation where we’ve got two really young quarterbacks, one that’s been with us, been in the system, understands how we want things done and the other one is a guy who was taken last year in the first round and shows some promise.”
However, he seems to be at least mulling the possibility that Newton could come on board. If the circumstances are right.
“I think with Cam, and I have thought about it, I mean, it’s something that’s run through my mind, and it’s about the situation and circumstances. I’m not sure I would do it. I’m not sure if I wouldn’t do it. It depends on circumstances.”
It’s unclear exactly what circumstances would be needed for the Redskins to consider bringing Newton in as a free agent. Likely, it would be something the franchise looked at if one of the young guys were injured.
So, with that in mind, it’s not looking like Newton could sign with Washington any time soon. After all, it’s going to be a while before the NFL gets back to any sense of normal amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
