The XFL officially announced its 2020 season will be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement went out in a letter sent to fans on Twitter Friday.
From the letter:
“The COVID-19 pandemic, and the most recent local and state regulations, have left the XFL no choice but to officially cancel the remainder of the 2020 season. This decision has been made with the health and safety of the entire XFL family as our top priority.”
“While we are disappointed to note complete the 2020 season, our hearts are full of appreciation for your overwhelming support.”
The announcement also included a note about the 2021 season, as the XFL assured fans that it looks “forward to playing full seasons for you — and with you — in 2021 and beyond.”
Previously, the XFL had suspended its 2020 season with the hope of returning at some point after the coronavirus pandemic crisis passed. Since then, one player has tested positive for COVID-19.
Furthermore, the spread of COVID-19 has only intensified in the United States since then, and on Friday Dr. Anthony Fauchi of the National Institute of Health said it may be “several weeks” before the large-scale “shelter-in-place” orders will be revoked.
