Surprise team emerges as a top favorite to sign Cam Newton

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton

Cam Newton is a free agent after being cut by the Carolina Panthers earlier this week, and one of the teams favored to land him might surprise you.

Odds Shark shared their latest odds on which team Newton will be playing for on Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season (via BetOnline).

The team that stands out near the top is the Denver Broncos. If Newton were to sign with Denver it would be a huge surprise. The Broncos, after all, have publicly pinned their future on last season’s second-round pick, Drew Lock out of Missouri.

Lock had a positive impact on Denver’s offense as a rookie. Starting five games at the end of the season, he completed 64.7% of his passes for 1,020 yards with seven touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also showed a willingness and talent for getting the ball to playmakers downfield.

With that in mind, it seems highly unlikely that the Broncos would sign Newton this season.

Among the other top teams listed, the Washington franchise has already made it clear Newton isn’t in its plans. The New England Patriots don’t have any money (but would be a very interesting fit). The Los Angeles Chargers have already indicated Tyrod Taylor is their guy. And most expect the Miami Dolphins to take a top rookie in the first round.

That leaves Jacksonville as a very intriguing landing spot for Newton, whose options have been dwindling as of late.
