Report: NBA commissioner expected to announce season will continue without fans in arenas

The NBA Board of Governors met Wednesday and reportedly shared a consensus that the league should continue, without fans attending, amid the coronavirus pandemic sweeping the globe. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, NBA commissioner Adam Silver “is expected to move in that direction with a decision on Thursday.

The alternative is putting the NBA season on hold, which reportedly is still on the table and has been discussed by the league’s owners.

This latest development comes on the heels of the Golden State Warriors announcing Wednesday that they will be playing against the Brooklyn Nets Thursday night in an empty Chase Center due after San Francisco banned large gatherings of more than 1,000 people.

Also on Wednesday, the NCAA announced that both the men and women’s Tournaments would be played without fans present, allowing only essential personnel and limited family access.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced Wednesday morning that the coronavirus (COVID-19) is now being officially classified as a pandemic. At this time, there are over 1,200 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States, up from below 500 on Sunday morning.
