Report: Derek Carr likely to be Raiders’ starter in 2020

Raiders, Derek Carr

The Las Vegas Raiders came into the offseason looking to shake things up at quarterback before they completed the move to Las Vegas., Now, just weeks after reportedly shopping him heavily at the NFL Combine, Carr appears set to start for the Raiders when their season begins in Las Vegas.

According to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, Carr is not on the trade block and the top Raiders’ reporter believes there’s now a 92% chance that he takes the field in Week 1 as the team’s starting quarterback.

Multiple reports emerged this offseason that the Raiders were preparing to move on from Carr. The 29-year-old quarterback is coming off an excellent season and drew interest from several teams. Meanwhile, head coach Jon Gruden seemingly wanted to shake things up and the team was connected to Tom Brady heavily.

Ultimately, the Raiders opted to sign Marcus Mariota. The move came at a cheaper cost than Brady would have and opens the door for the Raiders to now have a strong option behind their likely starter.

Carr will head into training camp, whenever it begins, as the likely favorite to win the starting job. He knows the system well and is coming off a season with 4,054 passing yards and a 100.8 quarterback rating.

If he struggles, though, Mariota will likely be ready to step in and hopefully do for the Raiders what Ryan Tannehill did for the Tennessee Titans in 2019.
