Report: Cam Newton having a hard time finding a trade partner

Cam Newton Jaguars

It doesn’t look like there’s a strong market for Cam Newton’s services. Days after the Carolina Panthers gave the former MVP quarterback permission to seek a trade, we’re not hearing a lot on this front.

As other quarterbacks land jobs, Newton’s options are dwindling. According to this report from Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic, Newton is having a hard time finding a trade partner. A release could be coming soon.

This can’t be considered terribly surprising news. Newton missed all but two games last season with a Lisfranc injury. That came mere months after he underwent shoulder surgery.

Newton’s $21.1 million cap hit for 2020 coupled with the Panthers having already found a replacement in that of Teddy Bridgewater are two other things holding up a potential trade. If another squad can add Newton at a lower cap hit while not giving up draft pick compensation, why would said team trade for him?

Should Newton hit the open market, he’ll likely receive more interest. A certain team back east that saw Tom Brady depart in free agency comes to mind first.
