Report: Broncos expected to target Cowboys star Amari Cooper in free agency

Amari Cooper, Redskins

The Denver Broncos are sitting pretty with north of $53 million to spend under the cap heading into free agency. One area that it’s been noted the team would like to address is wide receiver.

We now might have some clarity to this. According to Broncos beat writer Troy Renck of ABC 7 in Denver, general manager John Elway is expected to target Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper.

This makes sense in that Denver wants as many weapons as possible for young quarterback Drew Lock. Cooper would obviously provide that opposite a fellow youngster in Courtland Sutton who is coming off a 1,200-plus yard sophomore season.

Of course, this is all dependent on Dallas letting Cooper hit free agency. If a new collective bargaining agreement is not signed by Monday, the Cowboys will have an ability to use both the franchise and transition tags. If one is agreed to, Dallas would then likely be forced to let Cooper test free agency while placing the franchise tag on quarterback Dak Prescott.

Cooper, 25, recorded 79 receptions for 1,189 yards and eight touchdowns in his first full seasons with the Cowboys.
