Okay things are starting to get out of hand when it comes to the Washington Redskins and former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa.
Albert Breer of The MMQB, in his latest mailbag, shared an incredible quote from someone connected to the Washington franchise as it concerns the team potentially taking Tagovailoa at No. 2 overall, despite having drafted Dwayne Haskins with the 15th overall pick last season.
“…when I asked about kicking the tires on Tua Tagovailoa, while they have Dwayne Haskins on the roster: ‘We have to make sure we’re not passing on Michael Jordan.’ And I actually love that comparison. The Blazers passed on Jordan in 1984, and took Sam Bowie, because they already had a really good 2-guard, Clyde Drexler, in-house. In the end? Having Drexler and Jordan would’ve worked OK.”
Whew.
To be fair, Washington has done nothing but stir the coals when it comes to the idea they could move on from Haskins one year after taking him in the first round.
But comparing a guy who hasn’t played a single snap in the NFL to the greatest basketball player of all time? Folks, that is just nuts.
Can Tagovailoa transform a franchise? Absolutely. If he can stay healthy, that is. The good news on that front is that the former Crimson Tide star has already been cleared for some football activities following season-ending hip surgery last November.
And when healthy, Tagovailoa is absolutely electric under center. He doesn’t have the biggest arm but is the most accurate short-to-mid-range passer we’ve seen in years.
As it concerns Washington, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that all this hype could just be the team’s effort to garner as much as possible in a trade-down scenario with a team that really is desperate for a quarterback.
