Report: Alex Rodriguez interested in buying the Mets

Alex Rodriguez, Astros

New York Mets fans have been frustrated by the Wilpon family for years and desperately hoping for a sale. Now an unlikely hero might be interested in stepping forward to buy the Mets, former New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.

According to The New York Post, Rodriguez is interested in getting into ownership and is joining a list of potential suitors to buy the Mets. A-Rod’s interest in the team has reportedly intensified in recent weeks and wants to become the owner of the team he grew up rooting for.

Rodriguez received more than $450 million across his MLB career, signing two of the top-five biggest contracts in baseball history. The 44-year-old could follow in the footsteps of his former teammate and rival Derek Jeter. The Hall of Fame shortstop was part of a group that bought the Miami Marlins for $1.2 billion in 2017.

The Mets nearly sold at a valuation of nearly $2.6 billion before billionaire Steve Cohen backed out of the deal. Now with the team back up for bidding, Rodriguez appears ready to join forces and get back into baseball.

While it might be weird for Mets fans if Rodriguez became co-owner and CEO of the team, they’d certainly prefer it to the Wilpon family staying in control.
