The 2020 NFL free agent quarterback pool is wild. With guys like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Dak Prescott and Philip Rivers on the market, it’s going to be fascinating to see how it all unfolds.
Here’s a quick note from Field Yates of ESPN that really highlights what will probably be a frenetic free-agency frenzy.
To be fair, Brees and Brady have a combined 27 Pro Bowls to their credit. So it’s not surprising that this free agent class of quarterbacks is so rare.
Here’s a quick look at the quarterbacks who may be changing teams in 2020.
- Dak Prescott: The Dallas Cowboys will almost certainly use the franchise tag to secure him while attempting to negotiate a long-term contract.
- Tom Brady: Having spent his first 20 seasons with the New England Patriots, Brady is reportedly a guy Bill Belichick wants to have back. If Brady were to play for another team in 2020, it would be so darn weird.
- Drew Brees: It sure seems like a given that Brees will end up inking a short-term, team-friendly contract to help his beloved New Orleans Saints get back to the big game.
- Ryan Tannehill: The Tennessee Titans want Tannehill back. But if the quarterback is smart, he’ll see what the market dictates before making any decisions.
- Jameis Winston: The NFL’s biggest boom-or-bust player, Winston certainly has an elite arm. Despite his turnover problem, we imagine at least one team will throw big dollars at this former No. 1 overall pick.
- Philip Rivers: Perhaps on a physical decline, Rivers threw way too many interceptions last year and is likely moving on from the Los Angeles Chargers. However, in the right system, Rivers can still shred.
- Teddy Bridgewater: Once thought to be one of the NFL’s up-and-coming young stars, Bridgewater showed last season he can still play at an efficient level and lead a winning team.
- Marcus Mariota: A former second overall selection, Mariota has not lived up to the hype. But a change of scenery could work wonders for a player who has elite playmaking abilities.
Given the dearth of elite talent at the quarterback position, and that you really can’t win consistently in the NFL without a top passer, we could be in for some huge surprises this offseason. Get your popcorn ready!
