The Los Angeles Chargers are looking for a new quarterback with the Philip Rivers era officially in the rear-view mirror, but their answer may already be on the roster. Speaking on the radio Thursday, head coach Anthony Lynn said that Tyrod Taylor could end up being the starter in 2020.

Lynn was on AM 570 LA Sports in Los Angeles (via ESPN) when he touted Taylor as “a heck of a quarterback.”

“We couldn’t have a better backup right now, and now he has an opportunity to maybe step up into a starting role. I’ve had Tyrod before, and I know what this young man brings to the table, in the passing game and the running game.”

Getting into why he thinks Taylor can potentially be the answer, Lynn touted his ability to take care of the ball and not turn the ball over.

“One of the things he does very well is take care of the football. I believe every year he’s started in this league he’s been the No. 1 quarterback in taking care of the football. I believe more games are lost than won. So if we can just take care of the football and take it away, we’ll be okay.”

The Chargers, of course, are coming off a brutal 2019 season in which Rivers was a turnover machine (23 turnovers) and cost them more than a couple of ball games. They’ve been rumored to be in on Tom Brady, among other quarterbacks, and could certainly draft a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

But if Taylor is someone they feel they can rely on, then the Chargers can save a lot of money by just starting him in 2020 while they develop the quarterback of the future.
