Report: Texans, Deshaun Watson seeking long-term extension this offseason

As the Houston Texans prepare for one of the most important games in franchise history, the front office is reportedly already thinking about the future and making sure Deshaun Watson stays in Houston for years to come.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Texans are hoping to sign a long-term contract extension with Watson this offseason. The move would likely come after the Chiefs sign Patrick Mahomes to a record-breaking deal.

According to the report, Mahomes is expected to sign a new contract during the offseason when a new collective-bargaining agreement is reached. Once that happens, Watson would reportedly then look to top Mahomes’ likely record-breaking deal.

The 24-year-old will be eligible to sign a long-term extension this offseason after finishing his first three NFL seasons. Watson, the No. 12 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, is under contract for two more seasons under his rookie deal.

He is coming off another outstanding year in Houston. He finished the regular season with 3,852 passing yards, 413 rushing yards and 33 total touchdowns. Watson helped carry the Texans to a playoff win over the Buffalo Bills last week thanks to this absurd play.

Once Watson and the Texans can reach a contract extension, the front office could then turn its focus to bringing in more talent to help their franchise quarterback reach even greater heights in the future.
