While the current collective-bargaining agreement between the NFL and its players doesn’t end until after the 2020 season, the NFL Players Association took a significant step regarding negotiations on a new deal.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelisserio, NFLPA leaders scheduled a meeting on Thursday with the board of player representatives. The NFLPA plans to discuss the latest on CBA talks and receive input from the board on how the NFLPA should proceed.
According to the report, the NFLPA and NFL have spent several months in ongoing formal and informal discussions over a potential new CBA. The league continues to push for a 17-game season in exchange for increasing the players’ share of league revenue.
The league was hopeful it could reach a new agreement before the 2019 season, Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed hope in October that a new CBA deal would be signed soon, but talks are still ongoing as Super Bowl LIV approaches.
Players remain adamantly opposed to a 17-game season, which likely remains the largest hurdle preventing a new CBA is reached.
