The Dallas Cowboys are about to embark on a potentially franchise-altering offseason. This includes stars, quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper, slated to become free agents.

As it relates to Prescott, things have drawn on for months now without a resolution. Despite the Cowboys’ public optimism that something could get done, nothing has.

According to Cowboys VP Stephen Jones, Prescott remains the team’s No. 1 off-season priority with Cooper coming in second.

Retaining a franchise quarterback before he hits free agency obviously has to be seen as a priority.

At issue here is the fact that Dallas can only place the franchise tag on one player. If the team were to fail to lock up Prescott ahead of free agency, that could lead to Cooper’s depature once March comes calling.

There’s legitimately no reason to believe Dallas will let Prescott test the open market, especially given the team’s stance on potentially chasing after a much more celebrated quarterback in free agency.

Prescott, 26, is coming off a career-best season that saw him complete 65% of his passes for north of 4,900 yards with 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
