The Dallas Cowboys could be looking at bringing in a familiar face to help them down the stretch with Pro Bowl linebacker Leighton Vander Esch still sidelined to a neck injury.

According to NFL Media’s Jane Slater, Dallas has interest in signing former Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith.

Smith, 30, last suited up for two games with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this season. He was a preseason cut of the San Francisco 49ers after two injury-plagued seasons with the team.

The former USC standout has fallen on hard times after earning the Super Bowl XLVIII MVP as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. That game saw him record 10 tackles and a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown in a blowout 43-8 win over the Denver Broncos.

This signing would be more about depth as Dallas looks to clinch the NFC East against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 16.
