Adam Jones, a five-time All-Star outfielder and four-time Gold Glove Award recipient, is reportedly considering playing baseball in Japan.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the 34-year-old is talking to the Orix Buffaloes, a team in the Nippon Professional Baseball league, about a multi-year deal.
According to the report, Jones could reach an agreement this week if he decides to go overseas rather than wait for his market to develop in MLB.
Jones became a free agent last offseason and wasn’t able to sign a deal until March, when he agreed to a one-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He batted .260/.313/.414 during the 2019 season with 16 home runs and 25 doubles.
If the Buffaloes are offering Jones more money and a longer deal, the perennial All-Star from 2012-’15 could head to Japan. It would mark a rapid change, just a few years removed from seven consecutive seasons with 25-plus home runs as a star with the Baltimore Orioles.
