The Oakland Raiders will be without rookie running back Josh Jacobs for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Head coach Jon Gruden announced on Wednesday that the team will play it safe with its star rookie and give his shoulder a week to rest. The team is hopeful he can then return in Week 17.

Jacobs has played through a fractured right shoulder since Week 7 and recently the team has started to try and limit his practice reps. Despite playing through the injury and missing one game, the 21-year-old has rushed for 1.150 yards this season with seven touchdowns.

While Oakland is still clinging to slim playoff hopes, another loss on Sunday could push the team to play it safe and end Jacobs’ rookie season. He is a foundational piece of Jon Gruden’s offense and the team’s long-term goals carry more importance than a potential one-game return.
