Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is not afraid to offer up contrarian opinions when it comes to both his sport and the political world.
Cuban took that a step further on Monday in talking about the recent drama surrounding “lead management” in the NBA.
Offering up an opinion that doesn’t fit in tightly with mainstream narratives, Cuban indicated that it’s the best thing to happen to the league. The boisterous owner also gave his opinion about why load management makes sense.
“I think it’s the best thing to ever happen to the league. Teams have to be smarter about when they load manage,” Cuban said, via Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. “I’m all for load management. Worst than missing a player in a game is missing him in the playoffs.”
Most recently, the drama has surrounded the Los Angeles Clippers resting Kawhi Leonard for at least one game in back-to-backs twice this season.
While the NBA initially backed the Clippers’ decision, Adam Silver and Co. did fine the organization $50,000 for making confusing comments regarding Leonard’s injury.
Cuban does have a point here. The NBA product is largely defined by what we see in the playoffs. If star players were to miss time during the spring, it would have a larger impact.
On the other hand, fans pay top dollar to see some of the game’s best players go up against one another. When a player is resting because of numerous factors, it does impact the fan experience.
