Cam Newton seeing foot specialist, still not 100%

Cam Newton hasn’t played since Week 2 and is dealing with a Lisfranc injury that has not responded well to rehab, and now he’s seeing a foot specialist for the injury.

The Carolina Panthers announced Friday that Newton “traveled to Green Bay on Friday to visit with Dr. Robert Anderson, a renowned foot specialist who previously served as an assistant team physician with the Panthers.”

“I spent a long time speaking with Cam this week and he’s done everything he possibly can in his rehab process to get his foot to 100 percent,” general manager Marty Hurney said. “Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point. The next step is for him to go see Dr. Anderson and gather more information.”

Newton was seeing throwing balls and warming up ahead of the team’s Week 8 game against San Francisco, but to this point he has not practiced with the team since the second week of action.

Recently, Newton admitted that he knew he was dealing with a debilitating injury the first two games of the season and that he could take up to six weeks to get back into action. That timetable has now played out, however, and it’s time to see if more needs to be done to help his injury heal properly.

Kyle Allen remains the starter at this point, and given this latest news that may be a long-term job for the second-year former undrafted free agent out of Houston.

So far this season, he has completed 62.3% of his passes for 1,059 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions — all of which were thrown last weekend against the 49ers.
