Legendary CFB coach Charlie Taaffe passes away at 69

The college football world received some bad news on Wednesday following the passing of longtime coach Charlie Taaffe at the age of 69.

Taaffe’s sister announced his passing on social media after a short battle with cancer.

A legendary head coach for The Citadel from 1987-96, Taaffe’s coaching career began all the way back in 1973 at Albany. He served as an assistant at Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, Virginia, Army, Pittsburgh and Central Florida during a career that spanned five different decades.

He led Citadel to a 55-47-1 record with three playoff appearances in Division II during a nine-year tenure.

Taaffe also coached for four seasons in the Canadian Football League, leading Montreal to the Grey cup in 2000.

Our thoughts obviously go out to Taaffe’s family and the programs he impacted during a brilliant coaching career.
