Justin Verlander

The Tampa Bay Rays lost Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series against the Houston Astros, 6-2, thanks in large part to a dominant effort by Justin Verlander.

After the game, manager Kevin Cash offered a solid-gold quote about the experience:

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

As we’ve seen countless times before, Verlander was superb on Friday. Going seven full innings, he allowed one lonely hit, walked three batters, struck out eight and gave up zero runs.

By the time he left Game 1 of the ALDS, Verlander’s Astros were up 6-0.

Jose Altuve got the offense started with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, and then the Rays made an epic gaffe in the outfield to allow two more runs in that same inning.

That’s all Verlander needed to cruise to a victory and get the Astros off to a beautiful start in the playoffs.
