Saints’ Drew Brees to get second opinion on hand injury

A report earlier on Monday indicated that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will undergo surgery on his injured right thumb and is expected to miss six weeks.

Brees suffered the injury early in the Saints’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams this past Sunday. Initial indications were that the injury was serious. That still seems to be the case.

However, Saints head coach Sean Payton noted later on Monday that Brees will get a second opinion regarding the injury before undergoing surgery.

This is obviously a development that could change any timeline for a return to action. Good or bad.

Payton also noted in his day-after press conference that he was not about to get into hypotheticals regarding a potential return to the field for the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

What we do know is that this is going to be a multi-week absence. Backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will replace Brees over the short term.
