The New York Mets are 14 games out of first in the NL East and well out of the wild-card race, so it’s hardly surprising to hear they are going to be selling ahead of the deadline.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweeted Tuesday that the Mets “are committed sellers now” but noted star pitcher Noah Syndergaard “remains unlikely to be dealt now.” Instead, the Mets hope Zack Wheeler can make a good start on his return and garner interest, and Heyman wrote that Jason Vargas is probably the “most likely to go.”
Even in a full rebuild, the Mets are loathe to let Syndergaard leave. They favor him so much that the reported price tag they’ve placed on him is “a few arms and a leg.”
Wheeler is scheduled to make his return Friday after missing time with a shoulder injury. Prior to his injury he was highly coveted by teams looking to add to their rotation.
